Bookie Robin Hutchison

Robin Hutchinson is one of Ladbrokes finest - he is our man in Germany for the duration of the World Cup. For those of us that remain office bound or worst still without a TV at work - he will keep us up-to-date every day on what\'s happening.

Well qualified for the role having spent his formative years working for a tabloid where his specialist subject was fiction. Spent the first six months in his present position finding out where the toilets were located and trying to remember everyone\'s name - after failing to recognise the chief executive on his first day. Still has no idea about most people\'s names but has discovered they\'re next to the lift on the third floor. The toilets that is not the chief exec.

For reasons best known to themselves, senior management at Ladbrokes have sent him to Germany where he is spending the month of June (and hopefully the first week in July if England do well) pretending to work and weighing up the merits of Blue Nun over Black Tower. Hangovers permitting, he hopes to pop up on the television from over there too, but with a far better suntan than on previous occasions. It\'s a dirty job folks, but someone\'s got to do it...

World Cup Germany - Tue 4 July

It’s probably not very PC and forgive me if I’m beginning to sound like Norman Tebbit in my old age, but it bores me to tears listening to people who live in this country and celebrate when we lose at sport.

It’s not big and it’s certainly not clever. But it’s hard not to laugh at funny foreign names and the misuse of the English language sometimes.

It's universally agreed that the Germans have put on a fantastic World Cup. Their stadia, transport system and accommodation have all been spot on and their citizens have had the patience of saints, particularly when it comes to the English.

World Cup preparations continue apace here at the 'Brokes. The well-oiled machine is positively throbbing with anticipation. The boys in marketing have scaled down their pub lunches from an hour and a half to just one hour and the canteen manager has been looking up ways to deep fry sauerkraut. Customer services have even received their first request for a World Cup related death.

I’ve recently been accused of being a member of the prawn sandwich brigade.

Their members achieved instant notoriety when Roy Keane criticised them for their lack of knowledge about the game and for driving up the price of seats with their flash hospitality.

My best mate Ian was known as ‘Eegie’ for the first few years of his life because his big brother Phil couldn’t pronounce his name. It doesn’t strike me as being terribly difficult, but I'm sure it's as hard as Bartholomew or Balthazar to a two-year-old. I can see why Ricardo might be a problem though, even if you’re Brazilian.

According to Japanese scientists, robots will be beating us humans at football by the year 2050. Sadly they will have to do it without Peter Crouch it would seem. Apart from the fact he will be 49 by then, which is probably a little long in the tooth to be playing internationals, the big Liverpool striker has hung up his dancing shoes – at least for the time being.

One of the peculiar pleasures of going abroad has always been watching other people’s TV channels, as far as I’m concerned. Stuck in my Frankfurt hotel knocking out press releases for the national media, I’ve been doing rather a lot of it recently. Most of it has been football related of course, including all three games on Sunday. As a result I now know that ‘Tor’ is the German word for ‘Goal’ and that former West German striker Rudi Voller thought Angola was in the British Empire.

How we were supposed to believe that a priceless piece of art would ever be concealed inside a giant sausage is beyond me. But for what seemed like decades my family were endlessly amused by the to’ings and fro’ings of the Fallen Madonna Wiv Ze Beeg Boobies.

It’s hard to imagine the Nazi Occupation of France providing fertile ground for laughter but in ‘Allo Allo’ the boys at the BBC comedy department worked wonders. Coupled with Basil Fawlty’s famous ‘don’t mention the war sketch’ it’s now difficult to view our German friends as being anything other than figures of fun. I think it’s their accents as much as anything. That and their moustaches.

I'm a big fan of Bill Bryson. It's every travel writer's job to bring a place to live and describe the heart and soul of it as well as the bricks and mortar. But he has an ability to winkle out the more obscure facts and figures, the interesting ones that inform and entertain at the same time.

I was once told by one of Fleet Street's finest that we get the media we deserve in this country. We must all have done something pretty bloody awful in a previous life if that's the case. Many of their number remain worse than the plague. But not unlike the flea-borne illness, few of us have suffer as a result of them. Unless you work in Public Relations that is.

When I was a kid the only football to be seen with was the Adidas Tango. First used, if memory serves me correctly (which it probably doesn’t), in the Mexico ‘86 World Cup and later adopted by Ron Atkinson’s Manchester United, It was a thing of beauty and highly sought after. It also cost an arm and a leg which was why my mates and I all had a £5 black and white ‘Casey’ that went out of shape when it was kicked under a car. In itself the Casey was a step up from the plastic ones that melted when left within ten feet of a radiator, but it was never as good as the Tango

One of the pleasing things about working for a bookmaker is everyone's assumption that you've got inside information. One of the worst is them discovering you've not. Be it the Grand National or the FA Cup they all want the inside track. Of course, if you do give them a winner - on two legs or four - they'll tell friends it was their idea. And you should see the look on their faces when the horse finishes last or the team is knocked out in the first round.
