You can’t keep a good man down, even if you try to run him over. And especially if his name is Bruno the bear.

Europe’s most wanted furry fugitive has been hitting the headlines for weeks over here after running amok in Bavaria. He’s also been hitting cars near the Sylvenstein Reservoir south of Munich, yet still he evades capture.

It’s six weeks since the big fella wandered across the border from northern Italy where he was part of a programme to re-introduce Slovenian bears into their native environment.

Since then he’s been winding up the locals by using their sheep as a finger buffet. Despite an outcry from environmentalists, a team of local hunters have been out night and day trying to track him down among the dense forest and craggy peaks above the little town of Mittenwald.. They’ve even imported a live bear trap from the Rocky Mountains and a team of Finnish hunting dogs, but to no avail. He’s still on the run.

Diego Armando Maradona’s life has resembled a car crash in recent times and he must have felt like a hunted animal on numerous occasions. Despite being the best/second best player to have ever kicked a ball (depending if your vote goes to Pele or not) he’s been through some dark days of late.

He’s faced paternity suits in Italy, a messy divorce, an addiction to cocaine, weight problems and has even been forced to do an interview with Gary Lineker. (is it just me or does no-one else like the smarmy jug-eared prat?) But there he was yesterday bouncing up and down, waving his flag and singing his little heart out. Whilst it’s difficult to forgive him for the Hand of God incident in 1986, it was great to see him enjoying life again.

His team played some wonderful football against Serbia and Montenegro, with Esteban Cambiasso’s strike proving the undoubted highlight. The 31st minute effort, which involved nine different players and 24 passes, is already being talked about as one of the great World Cup goals. As good as Diego’s mazy run against England, or Carlos Alberto’s for the legendary Brazilian team in 1970. You don’t need to smarter than the average bear to know that this Argie side could go a long way in this tournament.
