The World Cup is always a shop window for the best players to prove just what they can do on the biggest stage of all.
However, one manager who has always resisted the urge to buy on a whim is Arsene Wenger, and who can criticise the Frenchman given his success down the years?
But Wenger may be about to abandon his transfer policy because I’m told his ‘keeper Jens Lehmann is urging the Gunners boss to try and prise Miroslav Klose away from Werder Bremen.
Lehmann thinks the 28-year-old hitman, who has already bagged four goals, could be the perfect foil for Thierry Henry at the Emirates Stadium next season.
If the move comes off, remember who told you first! Seriously, though, Klose is no flash in the pan and Wenger would be getting a top, top player who would really light up the Premiership.
Klose and his Germany team-mates face Sweden in the second round and I can’t see anything other than a win for Jurgen Klinsmann’s side.
The Germans are just too strong at the back and will not falter like England did against the Swedes on Tuesday.
Michael Ballack is growing into the tournament after missing the opener against Costa Rica and it looks like Chelsea have signed a complete player. I can’t wait for him to strut his stuff in the Premiership next season.
Going back to the game and I reckon the Swedes are not in the same league as Germany so I expect the hosts to go through to the quarter-finals without too many problems.
Elsewhere, Argentina are now down to the serious business after dazzling during the group stage. Some of their play has been outstanding and I doubt Mexico can cause an upset.
I don’t think the Mexican have a goal threat so it’s Hernan Crespo and his mates all the way for me. Riquelme is a great player for Argentina and he once looked set to play for Middlesbrough before Steve McClaren pulled the plug on a proposed deal. That must go down as a mistake in my eyes.
Moving on and I can’t wait for the England game so today is all about enjoying the football until the real nailbiting gets underway!
That’s all for now, I’ll wax lyrical about England’s chances tomorrow.
