Figo and Ronaldo doubtful ahead of clash 07/05/2006
Doubts are currently surrounding the fitness of Portuguese captain Luis Figo and Manchester United winger Cristiano Ronaldo ahead of the quarter-final against France. The young wideman has been suffering since he picked up a knock against Holland in the second round while Figo is believed to have incurred a thigh strain. Manager Luiz Felipe Scolari said: "They know they have problems and we need to check how they are to see if they can play. "The possibility is that Cristiano has a bigger chance and Figo a little bit less." Neither player was deemed fit enough to take part in full training with the squad yesterday and worked separately from the main group. The loss of either man would be a blow to Scolari, although Portugal will benefit from the return of midfielders Costinha and Deco tonight, both of whom were suspended for the England match having picked up red cards in the previous game. If Figo appears tonight it will add an interesting sub-plot to the tie, as he will be facing his ex-Real Madrid team-mate Zinedine Zidane two greats of modern European football in the twilight of their careers, going head to head as they strive for one final shot at glory. The Frenchman is heavily favoured to have a better game than his Portuguese counterpart he is at 8/1 to become the first goalscorer compared to Figo's 12/1. Zizou is also joint favourite with Thierry Henry to become man of the match at 4/1, while his ex-compatriot at club level has been valued at 10/1. Both players are elegant strikers of the ball and masters of free kick situations and Zidane has been fancied at 10/1 to score from outside the area, while Figo has odds of 16/1 to hit the back of the net from range. France are at 7/4 to win the World Cup while Portugal are at 9/2 to lift the famous trophy.
