France players tired but tenacious 07/06/2006
Members of the France team that will be contesting the World Cup final against Italy on Sunday said that their tiredness showed in a difficult game last night but that their spirit carried them through. Les Bleus did not live up to the expectations they had built up having played well against Spain and Brazil but were not really threatened by a lacklustre Portugal side. Following last night's game Juventus midfielder Patrick Vieira said the aftermath of previously playing some hard fought matches was evident. "Tonight our tiredness showed. We used up a lot of energy in our battle with Brazil, so we can't really say we performed well," Vieira said. "Without doubt, it was our hardest game since the start of the tournament, but we fought well." Centre-forward Thierry Henry added that the win was far from a straightforward victory and that the players' commitment to one another carried them through. "Now we have to get over the fact we're through," he added. "We need to concentrate and start preparing for the final." Les Bleus now go on to meet Italy on Sunday and are at evens to win the tournament, while the Azzurri are favourites at 8/11. Henry did not score last night, meaning that he still has three goals in the race to become top scorer while Germany's Klose has five. The hosts' striker is now a heavy favourite at 1/25 while Henry has been valued at 8/1 with one game left to play for both teams.
