England midfielder Steven Gerrard has launched an attack on Portugal's Cristiano Ronaldo following Saturday's quarter-final.

Manchester United winger Ronaldo approached the referee following a tussle between Wayne Rooney and Ricardo Carvalho and appeared to be asking for a card to be given to his club team-mate.

While it is not clear whether the Portugal man's words to the official prompted the red card that was shown to Rooney, Ronaldo has received vitriolic criticism from many quarters and Gerrard has also expressed his distaste for his behaviour.

"If it was one of my team-mates I would be absolutely disgusted in him, because I saw Ronaldo going over to the referee and giving him the card and I think he was bang out of order," the Liverpool captain said.

"Winking at the bench and his team-mates sums him up as a person, because if I was playing against my team-mate at Liverpool and they were involved in a situation like that I would never try and get them sent off."

Ronaldo now faces a difficult situation when he returns to Manchester. His current popularity in England coupled with his own admission that he wants to move to Real Madrid appear to make him appearing in the Premiership next season an increasingly unlikely prospect.

One occurrence that could offer England fans a small amount of satisfaction is Portugal going out of the World Cup as soon as possible – they are the outsiders to win the tournament at 6/1.

Ronaldo is fifth favourite to become top scorer at 100/1, while his team-mate Pauleta is even less likely at 125/1.
